Credit Limits for Customers – How to Set

Credit limits protect you from over-exposure when selling on udhar.

Why Set Limits

  • Risk control – Cap how much any one customer can owe
  • Cash flow – Avoid too much capital locked in dues
  • Collection – Easier to collect smaller amounts

How to Decide

  1. Track record – Long-term reliable customers: higher limit
  2. Income/repayment – Can they pay back in time?
  3. Order size – Typical purchase value
  4. Industry norm – 7–15 days credit is common for kirana

Example Limits

  • New customer: ₹2,000–5,000
  • Regular, good payer: ₹10,000–20,000
  • Long-term trusted: ₹50,000+

Enforce Gently

  • Communicate limits clearly
  • Hold new orders until overdue is cleared
  • Raise limits when they pay on time consistently
