HSN vs SAC Code – Difference Explained

HSN and SAC are classification codes for GST. HSN = goods, SAC = services.

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature)

  • For goods
  • 4, 6, or 8 digits
  • Example: 1006 (rice), 1905 (biscuits)

SAC (Services Accounting Code)

  • For services
  • 6 digits, usually start with 99
  • Example: 998313 (rental of machinery), 998511 (support services)

On Invoice

  • Goods invoice: HSN code
  • Services invoice: SAC code
  • Mixed: Both as applicable
