Input Tax Credit (ITC) – Conditions to Claim
Input Tax Credit (ITC) lets you set off GST paid on purchases against GST on sales.
Basic Conditions
- You are registered – ITC only for registered persons
- Supplier has filed – Supplier must have filed GSTR-1; the invoice must appear in your GSTR-2B
- Invoice has GST – Valid tax invoice with GSTIN
- Goods received – For goods, you must have received them
- Not blocked – Certain items (e.g. motor vehicles for personal use) don’t get ITC
Time Limit
Claim ITC by the earlier of:
- Due date of GSTR-3B for September of next FY, or
- Date of filing annual return
Common Mistakes
- Claiming without matching invoices in GSTR-2B
- Claiming on non-business purchases
- Missing the time limit
